There is a lot of buzz these days about social media marketing and how this is the new way of doing business on the internet. Have you ever noticed the there is a lot of confusion on how to do that?
Should we spend our time using Twitter, StumbleUpon, Facebook, and the like? If we should, then how should we do it? That is a valid question.
Not only that, but it seems that everyone has a completely different approach. This can be so confusing! What do I do and how do I do it. That’s what I want to know.
After a lot of searching and many false starts, I have found some answers that have given me some clarity and insight into how to do social media marketing.

In Tuesday’s post, I wrote about the 5 key components of building your own internet traffic machine which would, in turn, generate prospects within your target market. As we go into the internet presenting ourselves and advertising our opportunity; we have got to drive these potential prospects to a place where they can become acquainted with us and our opportunity. This is really a high tech application of relationship marketing.
So, how is that done exactly? That is done by creating an internet site that will serve as a central hub, so to speak, for all of our internet activities. This site will contain personal as well as professional material. It is a site where people can come and get to know us at their own pace. This will be a site features a certain amount of interaction as well. We will place information which will help people and perhaps entertains them too.
This type of internet site is called a blog. Over time, blogs will contain a wealth of information about a person and their business. People can be informed, entertained, and edified. And you can easily create and maintain a blog with little, if any, technical experience. This can also be done on a very small budget.
Your blog is your internet identity. It presents you as a real person. It also presents your business opportunity and any affiliate programs you represent. From this platform you will create and publish information for your target audience. As you create trust and rapport with your target audience, you earn the right to present your business as a high quality option for people to consider. As you go through the fabulous world of the internet interacting on social networks, bookmarking sites, forums, marketing, and advertising you will anchor these activities back to your blog. This is a place where you will drive interested people from your target audience to go to get to know you and, in turn, your business.
This will serve as the beginning of a sales funnel. This is where interested people will find out about you, what you do, and how you do it. Again, this is a modern application of relationship marketing. As they sort through the information you place on your blog, they will move through the process to become a customer or even a business partner.
Wee’ how is that done? I can’t possibly do that. I wouldn’t know what to write. I would be out of ideas in less than a week! What then? Well, slow down cowboys and ladies, let’s pick up on this theme again early next week.
See you then.

This series is a repeat. And yet it is essential information. Since this blog’s readership has grown over the past couple of months, I wanted to be certain this is standard information. This will be one of the major subjects JonClaytonBizBlog will be developing after we return from a 3 day pastor’s conference early next week. Your comments are welcome. Any comments made early next week will be delayed for several days. Thanks!

Have you seen the endless advertisements? They are all over the place. For some of your hard earned money (usually quite a sum at that), you can use our “proven” system and the cash will simply pour into your business. Have you ever been involved in such a “proven” system? Yeah, me too…and based on my experience, I do believe that cash will pour in such a transaction, but all too often it will pour the other way; from your pocket into the owners of the system.
With that in mind, why not build your own? Why should we spend our money in order to sustain someone’s house on Maui when we can each work to secure our own financial security? I am thinking that was one of your goals when you started your home business. And it is certainly true of me as well
You can create an internet traffic machine to build your business. It is not exactly rocket science. I believe it is not only something that can be done; it is something each one should do in order to take our businesses to the next level, whatever level that is. You do not need a great upline, or one that is supportive. In fact, it is not even necessary to speak with your upline. This works just as well for direct sales and affiliate marketing as it does for network marketing.
You simply need to build a system that attracts potential customers to you. This is the very heart of attraction marketing. That is, attracting customers to you by providing them with useful information that is of interest to them. This is the central aspect of your internet traffic machine.
This internet traffic machine can be built by you for very little money. And can be built progressively. You will decide who to attract based on your analysis of your target market. Once you understand the theory behind this, you can target several potential customer groups at the same time using the same methodology. Simply amazing!
And it all starts with a core. This core will be your magnet to draw your target market to you.

Everyone – from politicians, businesses, musicians, celebrities and many other groups of people – uses social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other social networking outlets to spread their message, build their businesses and connect with others.
Do they know something we don’t?
Networking, whether online or offline, is a great use of time when done properly. As with anywhere you spend your time, knowing why you are doing it, how you will measure success and having a plan is the best approach.
With that said, I jumped in with both feet last year with the guidance of a social media expert, and I have found clients, joint venture partners, speaking engagements and other great connections through various social media outlets. I am a member of more social media outlets than I can count, but I currently focus on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. While I am not an expert in social media, here are five reasons to take some time to learn the benefits of social media.
1. There Is No Cost
There is no direct cost unless you opt for an upgrade, if one is offered. I haven’t paid for an upgrade and have steadily increased my list to include over 1000 followers between just three social media outlets, and without much effort.
2. Build Your Business by Connecting With Peers
Are you interested in finding joint ventures, affiliates, guest experts or other peers you can bounce ideas off of? In the last few weeks alone, I have located one large joint venture partner and have had several other partnership opportunities cross my desk. Business owners just like you are using social media to connect with others who are interested in using your articles, hosting you as a guest expert on teleseminars, webinars and live events, and even creating projects together!
3. Build Your Business by Following Reporters You Are Targeting
Would an article written by a certain reporter make your year? Follow them on Twitter or Facebook and see what is of interest to them and what they are writing about. You never know what golden nugget you’ll find by following them online that may open the door at the right time. Follow them and invite them to follow you as well! Or with LinkedIn you can find out how many degrees you are from them. You may surprise yourself by being only one or two degrees away from your target!
4. Showcase Your Expertise, Build Your Platform and Attract New Clients
Social media is an interesting animal. While many people use it to increase their businesses, you must be mindful about outright promotions. Generally speaking, heavy marketing of your products and services on these sites is a big no-no. Here’s how I do it. I’ll post something like this: “Just got off the phone with social networking guru Nancy Marmolejo. Now I’m off to finish writing my sales page for the Business Breakthrough Series.” People who are intrigued will check you out and may end up deciding to follow you and … bingo! They have just entered your world!
5. Reach Large Audiences
The world is your oyster in social media. There are only a few businesses that are truly limited by geographic boundaries, especially if you are in the information marketing business. Being active on social networking sites eliminates geographic boundaries and allows you to reach a vast number of people from all over the world. If you have products and services that can be purchased by anyone in the world, being active in social media is an absolute must for you. I recently held a teleseminar with people from over 10 countries in attendance, all from the comfort of my home office! And my sweat pants!
So, is social media worth the time? It depends. Social media is absolutely the wave of the future, and you will need to know something about it at some point. However, whether you work it into your plan for 2009 depends on your goals. If you have a goal of increasing your reach to prospects either locally or internationally, you can do that quite effectively through social media. However, if you can cannot and will not commit to
learning how to “tweet” on Twitter or communicate on Facebook or use your connections on LinkedIn, it will not be worth your time.
My advice to clients when they are just starting out is to select one social media outlet, whether it’s Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter, and master it before jumping into every outlet possible. You obviously need to schedule time for connecting, so select the social networking outlets that will benefit you the most.
Now that I am experiencing the financial results of my online efforts, I understand why this is such a great use of my time and I’m hooked!

5 Secrets to Creating a Powerful Google Profile
By Donna Gunter
I often want to find out more about someone before I decide to do business with that person. To get the information that I need, I Google the person’s name and see how well-known they are online and what they have to say. What I discovered in my search is that their social media profiles, like those found on Twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook, show up high in the search results. Google, however, has started giving these well-known social networking sites a run for their money by creating their own online profile option.
Google Profiles are simple web pages where you can list general information about yourself. Anyone who can create an account on Google and verify their real name through a screening routine can now have a personal profile page on Google. The most powerful aspect of this system, however, is the ability to include links in your profile, which can pack a powerful search engine optimization (SEO) punch for you. Best of all, Google provides this service at no cost to you.
Profiles are public and include your actual name and/or a nickname. You can list your occupation, where you are located (your profile will be used for Google Maps), a list of links, your photo and a short introduction. Google even provides a way for visitors to click a link on your profile to contact you directly.
Here are 5 secrets to creating a powerful Google Profile:
1. Upload your photo. One of the keys to creating relationships online is to let others know you’re a real person. The easiest way to do that is to provide a visual cue, like a photo, to help them remember you.
2. Include keywords in bio. The “About Me” section is where you can use outbound keyword-rich links to your advantage. As you compose this section, be sure and include several keywords others might use to find you, and link those back to your web site. For example, if you’re a divorce attorney in Houston, you might have the keyword phrases, “Houston divorce attorney” and “family law attorney” as links back to your primary web site.
3. Link to your sites and profiles. You can link to any number of sites from your Google profile. Just like in your bio, use keywords to your advantage here as well. So, if you run a cleaning business and have produced several videos demonstrating what you do, instead of listing your link to your YouTube videos as “YouTube.com,” you might instead use “Professional Cleaning Videos,” which links to your YouTube stream instead.
You should add the following links to your profile:
–web site(s)
–blog
–all of your social networking profiles (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Linkedin)
–YouTube.com or UStream channel
–Squidoo lens
–Social bookmarking profiles (Delicious, Reddit, Digg
–Article syndication page
–Free giveaway sign up page
–Products page
–Services page
4. Showcase your products and services. The page editor allows you to upload images through photo sharing sites Flickr and Picasa. Upload images of your physical or information products or shots of you in action delivering your service.
5. Take care when choosing your profile URL. If you have a Gmail account, Google will ask you if your want to use that username as part of your profile URL. Be aware that if you choose that option, you are inadvertently giving away your Gmail address. I chose instead the longer profile URL with the long string of numbers. I don’t like my email address appearing anywhere online, so even though this profile URL is longer and more difficult to reference, it beats filling my inbox with spam.
If you don’t use Gmail, you can select any available username to be part of your profile URL. If later on you sign up for Gmail, you can choose this username as your Gmail username. Once you’ve selected your customized URL, you won’t be able to change it or delete it. However, you can make it private at any time by selecting your old URL on the “Edit profile” page.
Take a few minutes today to claim your name and create a powerful profile for your business. It costs you nothing, creates powerful one-way inbound links back to your site, and will help you get found online.
