having-fun2Have you ever noticed that people who are really good at what they do make it look fun? The reason they make it look fun is because, to them, it is fun, whether it’s running a copying machine, installing a water pump, giving a sales presentation, playing basketball, performing surgery or teaching a classroom full of eight-year-olds. Those who do a great job are those who genuinely enjoy the job they’re doing. Those who excel are those who have fun.

Perhaps you think that installing a water pump is not any fun, but that’s just your opinion and, by the way, it is subject to change. The mechanic who truly enjoys putting in that water pump, and who does an excellent job of it, has somehow, at some point in time, found a reason and a way to really, truly enjoy it. And because of that, the water pump will be installed perfectly.

A big part of being successful at any chosen endeavor is finding a way to have fun while doing whatever it takes to achieve that success. That applies in general to life itself. Those who enjoy life the most are usually the most successful at living it.

You know that you’re much better at doing the things you enjoy than you are at doing the things you detest. Your enjoyment of any particular activity is a powerful way of encouraging you to get better and better at doing it. The more you enjoy it, the more you do it, and the more you do it, the better you become. The more you enjoy it, the more interest you have in it, and the more interested you are, the better you become. The more you enjoy it, the more commitment you have to improving yourself. Having real, genuine fun can be an enormously powerful positive force in your life.

Having fun naturally encourages you to be more creative, more innovative, more open to new and imaginative ideas. It can add a powerful new dimension to any endeavor. Having a good time helps you to more easily relate with other people, and gives real and lasting substance to those relationships. Think of the people with whom you’ve shared enjoyable experiences, and you’ll understand how those experiences can add a positive and permanent quality to your relationships.

One big misconception about having fun is that it can only be done in certain very limited situations. Many people assume that if they’re occupied with earning a living they could not possibly be able to have fun. Others assume if they’re performing a serious or critical task that there is no way they could have fun doing it. If you think that way, then consider broadening your definition of fun. The fact is, you can enjoy doing almost anything, no matter how profitable or serious it might be. Earning a living and having fun are not mutually exclusive, not by a long shot. There are many people who thoroughly enjoy their work and as a result they are extremely good at it. Acting seriously and responsibly, with care and concern, in no way precludes the thorough enjoyment of what you’re doing. Just ask any skydiver. Skydiving is serious business. Mistakes can easily be fatal. And yet, for those who do it, skydiving brings a kind of fun and enjoyment that cannot be duplicated.
