Certainly your circumstances have an influence on your life. Just as important, though, is the way you perceive and respond to those circumstances, and that depends largely on the power of your thoughts. What some may see as a setback, others will recognize as an opportunity, simply by using the power of thought. What some people may only complain about, other people will find a way to do something about, by using the power of thought.
You have access to the power of thought no matter where you live, no matter what resources you have available to you, no matter what you’ve experienced in the past, no matter what other people may think of you. The way to exercise that power is to focus and direct your thoughts so that they lead you in the direction you wish to go.
When you’re driving your car at a high rate of speed, it can quickly take you where you want to go. And to get there safely, you must constantly exercise precise control over the vehicle. Otherwise, you could run off the road, or run into another vehicle, and at such a high speed the results would likely be disastrous.
Thinking is similar to driving a fast-moving vehicle. When you focus and direct your thoughts, you’ll get where you want to go quickly and directly. Yet when you let your thoughts wander, they can wander into some very undesirable places and suddenly the power of your own thoughts is working against you.
When you’re driving, you don’t just point the car in the right direction and then abandon control. You must exercise constant control from the beginning to the end of the journey, making necessary adjustments along the way. Using the power of thought is the same way. You don’t just think about what you want to accomplish and then move on to other thoughts. To reach the goal, you must remain focused on it, making necessary adjustments along the way.
