Being Effective Part 3
ByTable of contents for Being Effective
To be effective, you’ve got to be focused. When you start trying to do too much, when you overload yourself, the effectiveness of everything you do will suffer. Though you have unlimited possibilities, you must work with limited time and resources. It’s great to be ambitious. That in itself can make you much more effective. It pays to realize, though, that you simply cannot have it all at once. When you think about it, you wouldn’t even want to. It would be meaningless. If you try to do it all, your effectiveness will take a nose-dive and you’ll end up with nothing. Instead, rather than spreading yourself too thin, work diligently on one thing at a time. That’s the strategy which will enable you to accomplish the most.
Have you ever noticed that when you don’t need any new business, that’s when you get it? And when you’re desperately trying to increase sales, you just can’t seem to find any new customers? Sometimes it seems that the harder you try, the less effective you are. That’s because itÕs possible to try too hard, to get so uptight and obsessed with something, that you end up losing most of your effectiveness. Too much of anything will cause tunnel vision and burn-out. Keep in mind that effectiveness is not about trying. It’s about results.
Have you ever been “stuck,” trying to figure out the answer to a tough problem? You work and work on it, and can not seem to find the answer. Then you take the weekend off, come back to it on Monday, and suddenly the answer is obvious. What happened? You got so close to the problem, you couldn’t possibly see the solution. When you backed away for a little while, you were able to see much more clearly and become much more effective.
Of course it’s important to be persistent in your efforts. And just as important is balance. DonÕt get so obsessed with what you’re doing that you lose balance.
